Brief History of Kitakyushu
Kitakyushu, with the population of one million, was established in February 1963 by the equal-basis amalgamation of five cities; Moji, Kokura, Wakamatsu, Yahata and Tobata. In around 1600, Kokura Castle was constructed and the Kitakyushu area was prospered as a castle town. In 1901, the Meiji Government initiated for the establishment of the government-managed Yahata Steelworks which was the largest steel company in Asia. Since then, automobile-related industries have been set up one after another. Today, along with the structual changes in industry, high-tech indutries including industrial robots, IC-related products and biotechnologies are being generated in his area.

Used to be the Ogasawara Family’s residing castle and now is Japanese first
“Castle Pavilion”. The diorama of re-creation of Kokura’s Castle town and
other displays represent Japan’s high technology.
Moji Port is remembered in history for its once flourishing international trade. The rows of buildings covered with
a nostalgic air give whole town an atmosphere of romance.
At the “Mojiko Retro Observatin Room” one can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the whole Kanmon Strait area from approximately
100 meters high. The illuminations of the night view and more to the romance of the moment.
